This structure’s 600-foot glass dome was hailed as “the eighth wonder of the world when the hotel opened in 1902,” said the editors of Midwest Living. That translates into six overhead acres. A massive stone fireplace dominates one wall, and the floor is filigreed with tile mosaics. After falling into ruin, the hotel has been given a $500 million, two-year renovation that includes a spa and a casino. All 250 rooms feature vintage-look furniture and oversize bathrooms. Also restored was a 1917 golf course, designed by the legendary Donald Ross.
